Yuhui is a Senior Associate in Incisive Law.

He has extensive experience in advisory work and commercial disputes resolution. His focus includes maritime and shipping law, as well as insurance related matters.

Yuhui specialises in maritime, shipping and insurance law. He has advised and represented clients in both wet and dry shipping related matters, including but not limited to collisions, charterparty disputes, carriage of goods, and crew claims.

On top of representation within the Singapore Courts, Yuhui is also experienced in other forms of disputes resolution including mediation within the SMC as well as international arbitration under the SIAC and SCMA rules.

Prior to joining the firm, Yuhui worked as a P&I Claims Handler for an international insurance company, and was also a Legal Associate in a boutique shipping law firm in Singapore. With legal and commercial experience within the maritime industry, Yuhui seeks to provide practical solutions in line with economic realities faced by all clients.

Matters handled prior to joining the firm:

  • Successfully defending a seafarer employer before the Singapore High Court in the first Singapore decision to consider novel issues of law involving the overlap of the Maritime Labour Convention and Work Injury Compensation Act regimes. Full judgment was published in MTM Ship Management Pte Ltd v Devaswarupa and others [2022] SGHC 178.
  • Assisted in a claim by one of the world’s biggest commodities trading companies against a shipowner. Won on liability and matter was settled prior to the hearing at the Court of Appeal. Full judgment was published in Wilmar Trading Pte Ltd v Heroic Warrior Inc [2019] SGHC 143.
  • Handled an SIAC arbitration claim by a Malaysian company against a Singapore palm oil trading company under a sale and purchase contract for palm oil. Matter was settled.
  • Acted for a Singapore listed chemicals company in a demurrage dispute arising from a sale and purchase contract for ethane.
  • Successfully advised and acted in various disputes involving collision of vessels, including the first reported judgment involving collision of vessels in Singapore.
  • Handled the removals of two sunken vessels in Malaysian waters under the Nairobi International Convention on Wreck Removals.
  • Advised various international commodities trading houses and assisted in the resolution of various disputes regarding international sale of goods and commodities sale and purchase contracts concluded on different bases under INCOTERMS. Such disputes include typical non-payment scenarios, force majeure situations, damage and/or contamination to cargo, LAYCAN and demurrage disputes and string / back-to-back contracts.
  • Represented various IG P&I Clubs and various insurers for their recovery claims in Court and arbitration including but not limited to claims under marine, industrial, public liability and workplace injury policies.
